Met Office Civil Contingency Aircraft (MOCCA)
On behalf of the UK Met Office, DO Systems owns, operates and maintains the Met Office Civil Contingency Aircraft (MOCCA) – a Cessna 421C with the ability to measure and track volcanic ash throughout northern Europe.
The Cessna 421C was selected due to its capability for pressurised high-altitude flight and its ash-resilient piston engines, and it is purpose-equipped with an array of sensor devices enabling it to detect and analyse atmospheric contaminants.
The aircraft is operated on DO Systems' Air Operator Certificate (AOC) according to public-transport regulations, and is at readiness to respond to a volcanic event or any other contingency. When the task dictates, it can deploy and sustain the mission requirements utilising engineering support from DO Systems subsidiary Part 145 company.
